What is a Munchkin cat?
The Munchkin is a relatively new breed of cat and was recognized by TICA The International Cat Association in 1994.
The first Munchkins appeared in 1983 when Sandra Hochenedel from Louisiana found 2 pregnant cats of which she kept one of them naming her Blackberry.
Half of the kittens born to Blackberry had short legs and one of the short legged males given to Kay LaFrance by the name of Toulouse remained unneutered and a number of short-legged stray cats appeared around the neighbourhood.
It is from Toulouse and Blackberry that the Munchkins of today have originated.
The Munchkin was introduced by TICA in 1991 to the general public on a televised cat show at Madison Square Garden.
The Munchkin is characterized by its relatively short legs which has been caused by a naturally occurring genetic mutation.
Their short legs does not hamper their speed or leaping abilities.
Munchkin cats are known to be people orientated and placid in nature, playful, inquisitive, outgoing and intelligent.
Munchkins are very similar to normal domestic cats except of course the length of their lengths, some of which have longer hind legs than front legs.
Their coats have all the same colouring as domestic cats.
Male munchkins are heavier than their female counterparts weighing in at a solid 6-9 pounds whereas the females typically weigh in at a range of 4-8 pounds.
Apart from TICA the Munchkin breed is also recognized by he American Association of Cat Enthusiasts (AACE), The United Feline Organization (UFO), the Southern Africa Cat Council,[ and the Waratah National Cat Alliance in Australia.
Several cat registries do not recognize the Munchkin and these include the Federation Internationale Feline, Governing Council of the Fancy Cat and the Cat Fanciers Association.
The Munchkin has been successfully crossed with the curly haired La Perm to create the Skookum, the hairless Sphynx to create the Minskin and Bambino and the very curly haired Selkirk Rex to create the Lambkin.
The Persian breed group includes Himalayans and Exotic Shorthair, to create the Napoleon and crossed with the Bengal to create the Genetta cat.
