What is a Minskin?
The Minskin began its development by Paul McSorley in Boston Massachusetts in 1998. The Minskin cat is a cross between a Munchkin and a Sphynx. The Sphynx is a breed of cat characterized by its lack of fur. The idea was to produce a short legged cat with fur in its extremities.
The first Minskins were born in 2000 and by 2005 there were 50 Minskins that filled the necessary requirements of the breed.
The Minskin may have sparse hair but its belly is always hairless. The body of the cat always feels warm and of course there is very little shedding. They come in all colours and patterns.
The Minskin is known to be an outgoing affectionate individual and does well in a home with children as well as other pets. They are intelligent, friendly and very playful.
The Minskin is stocky in its appearance and is short owing to its short legs. They have round head and eyes and long pointed ears.
Minskins typically weigh around 4 pounds and are good companions for families with children and senior citizens with arthritic hand who love lap cats.
Minskins have very few health problems but do require regular bathing with a mild shampoo to keep their skin supple and healthy.
Minskins are best kept indoors to prevent yeast infections and protect them from the cold as well as sun burn in hotter climates.
The Minskin is currently in TICA’s program that monitors the development of new breeds.
The Minskin is a rare breed and can be difficult to find. When shopping around for a Minskin it is best to obtain a health certificate from the breeder as well as making sure they have had their shots and been dewormed. To make sure your Minskin is healthy it is also advisable to take them to the vet within 72 hours of purchase.
As Minskins are a rare breed and difficult to find you can expect to pay upwards of $1200. Typically Minskins are available for purchase at about 16 weeks of age owing to their size.
