What is a Genetta cat?
A Genetta is a dwarf breed of cat that is being developed by using breeds such as the Savannah, Bengal, Munchkin, Domestic Short Hair and Oriental Short Hairs with the idea to achieve a cat similar in appearance to the African Genet which sports an exotically spotted or marbled coat. The Ocicat, Serval, and Asian Leopard breeds may later be added to the gene pool. Serval and Asian Leopard cats would bring wild blood into the gene pool.
The Genetta has been registered by TICA as an experimental breed and was first created in 2006 by Shannon Kiley of the Pawstruk Cattery. The first Genetta kittens were born on the 13th of December 2006. The very first Genetta kittens in that litter were 50% Bengal.
The ideal Genetta should have short legs and a long body with a weasel like appearance. Its tail should be long, preferably longer than its torso and have a pattern of rings.
Not all kittens in a litter will have the short legs, some are born with legs of a regular length and these are regarded as non-standard. Non-standard Genettas very much resemble the Bengal which have used to create the Genetta breed. As the breed continues over the next few years non-standard Genettas will look less and less like Bengals but will have their own unique quality of appearance.
Long legged Genettas would have to be bred to short legged Genettas to produce more dwarf kittens as they are carrying the dominant gene. It is impossible to produce short legged kittens from long-legged parents.
The colours of the Genetta coat can be brown/black or silver, has a pelt like texture and can be spotted or have a marbled tabby like pattern. Genettas shed very little hair owing to their Bengal heritage.
The Genetta cat has large round ears high on its head, large round eyes with a weasel like muzzle.
The short legs of the Genetta do not inhibit its movement. They are very quick on their feet. The Genetta is affectionate by nature and very playful. they are able to jump on beds, sofas and chairs but do have problems reaching high places.
What does a Genetta cat cost? Prices vary and are calculated according to height and coat patterns Non-standard Genettas (long legs) range from $250-$6000 while a standard Genetta $1500-$12000. The wild blood in the Genetta makes for a rarer lineage and is therefor more valuable.
